A preliminary survey of the fish fauna in the vicinity of Santa Ana del Yacuma in Bolivia (río Mamoré drainage) Biota Neotropica
Hablützel,Pascal István.
The inventory of fish species of the río Mamoré sub-drainage in the Bolivian Amazon is far from being complete. This article informs about a small scale species inventory in the close vicinity of the town Santa Ana del Yacuma (drained by the río Yacuma, a left side tributary of the río Mamoré). Sampling four habitat types, 615 fish specimens belonging to 101 species were collected. Four species were reported for the first time from the río Mamoré sub-drainage: Aphyocharax rathbuni, Apistogramma erythrura, Apistogramma similis and Hyphessobrycon elachys. Differences in species composition among sampled habitats stress the importance of including a high number of collecting sites across biotic and abiotic environmental gradients to reliably survey species...

Oliveira,Rianne Caroline de; Deprá,Gabriel de Carvalho; Zawadzki,Cláudio Henrique; Silva,João Carlos Barbosa da; Graça,Weferson Júnio da.
Abstract: The Madeira River is the most extensive tributary of the Amazon River and has the largest diversity of fishes in the world. On its right bank, the Madeira River receives the Jamari River, in which the first hydroelectric power plant (HPP) in State of Rondônia, Samuel HPP, was built. Besides this, other dams were built in the Jamari River and its tributaries, however, the available information in the scientific literature about the ichthyofaunistic diversity of this basin is rare. This work aims to provide an ichthyofaunistic inventory in a region of the Jamari river basin, in the State of Rondônia, where three small hydropower plants (SHPs) were implemented. The ichthyofauna was sampled in 16 expeditions between August 2015 and December 2018....

Cytogenetic and DNA barcoding reveals high divergence within the trahira, Hoplias malabaricus (Characiformes: Erythrinidae) from the lower Amazon River Neotropical Ichthyology
Marques,Diego Ferreira; Santos,Fabíola Araújo dos; Silva,Simoni Santos da; Sampaio,Iracilda; Rodrigues,Luís Reginaldo Ribeiro.
Molecular and cytogenetic data have provided evidence of cryptic speciation in the widespread South American trahira, Hoplias malabaricus. In the present study, karyotypes and DNA barcode sequences of specimens from seven populations inhabiting the lower Amazon River were analyzed in order to characterize the levels of genetic divergence within a single karyomorph. All the specimens presented karyotypes with 2n = 40 chromosomes (20m+20sm) that were consistent with the species' C karyomorph. The DNA barcodes revealed six haplogroups, with clear divergence between populations from Brazil and Argentina. The results support the species complex hypothesis and indicate that a single karyomorph of H. malabaricus may harbor more than one species

Deficient downstream passage through fish ladders: the case of Peixe Angical Dam, Tocantins River, Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Pelicice,Fernando Mayer; Agostinho,Carlos Sérgio.
Downstream passage through fish ladders and other facilities remains largely uninvestigated in South America. In view of this concern, we monitored ascending and descending fish movements through the fish ladder at Peixe Angical Dam, upper Tocantins River, Brazil, between September 2009 and August 2010. To investigate the extent of downstream passage, the fish fauna was sampled monthly (i) at sites upstream and downstream from the dam and (ii) inside the ladder. To distinguish between ascending and descending movements, the fish ladder remained open (permanent water flow), but a screen blocked the complete passage of fish in both directions. The results of the study indicated that the ladder restricts fish movements in both directions. Few species were...

Distributional patterns in Brazilian Serjania (Sapindaceae) Acta Botanica
Acevedo-Rodriguez,Pedro.
The present paper analyzes the distribution of Serjania in Brazil, by comparing and contrasting the species occuring in three major phytogeographic regions: the Atlantic coast, the planalto, and the Amazon basin. The Atlantic coast region has the highest percent (70%) of species endemic to the area, and shares many species with the planalto region. The planalto region shares most of its species with the Atlantic coast and the neighboring countries, but still has a 33% of endemic species to the area. The Amazon basin has only a 4% of species endemic to the area, with most of the reminder species widely distributed through-out the area.
